Breaking News! Norah O’Donnell Is So Pretty
What’s wrong with the media? Pretty, talking airheads posing as journalists.
It’s Wednesday afternoon and I was just watching the MSNBC coverage of the Democratic Convention when suddenly I was MAD AS HELL AND COULDN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!There she was, the lovely-to-look-at Norah O’Donnell occupying the anchor chair of the MSNBC set conducting interviews. My ire was first raised by her assertion that Obama hadn’t made his energy plan clear. What a lazy, good-for-nothing reporter she really is! Just night before last I retreated to the Jim Lehrer News Hour on PBS, and they ran a whole segment, complete with a tour of the Denver area, to show examples of what Barack Obama’s energy plan is, complete with facts and figures.
Gee, Norah, maybe you should stop primping and go out and get the story.
Then just a few minutes later she interrupted a guest who was talking about honest-to-god issues with a question about the columns on the set of Invesco Field for tomorrow night’s Obama acceptance speech. Honest to God, she really did. That’s when I hit the mute button and headed straight for my keyboard. How is that really news? Just because the Republican talking point of the day is exactly that?
Actually, to be fair to Ms. O’Donnell, MSNBC and CNN as well as the other well-funded-by-big-business television networks all have been loitering on the job. But it’s worse than that. They not only have not gone out to get the story on one of the biggest issues facing the voters of this nation, they have wasted all of our time with “personality” issues. What is this? E! Television? Sometimes it looks more like the National Enquirer. Take that! I realize that it’s a lot easier and cheaper to sit around and gossip about Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain and their peculiarities and gaffs than to actually get out of the studio and find the truth for the American voters who more and more rely on the medium of television to get their news. But this is getting ridiculous! What is wrong with you people? Have you no shame?
If you have no shame, then I’m ashamed for you. For years I depended heavily on the local daily newspaper as a source of information, but here in Texas our big-city dailies have become right-wing propaganda tools and then one by one taking over our small-town publications to complete their stranglehold on the state. It’s so bad in my neck of the woods that nobody actually buys the local rag because it is useless, but the well-funded right throws it into our driveways for free each week. Do you think they don’t have an agenda going on? Of course they do.
That’s why I take umbrage when my last hope for fair and sensible disbursement of information, television news, becomes a ridiculous parade of presentations designed more to entertain than to inform. If gossip is what I’m interested in, I’ll call my mother and talk about the rest of the family. At least we all know each other and no real harm is done. But when a group of people with the overwhelming power of the 24-hour news channels and broadcast network news resort to cheap gossip and treat our democracy as though it is designed solely for the entertainment of the masses, there is great harm done. It cheapens the entire process.
So Ms. O’Donnell, if you’re not interested in being a serious journalist, get out of the way and let – shall we say – Gwen Ifill take your chair. And that goes for the rest of you celebrity television “reporters.” If this makes you mad, you probably had it coming.
I’m Left-Eyed Jack, and I approve this message.
