One of the hardest things to get our heads around in this world is the senseless killing done in the name of country and God. We are constantly confronted by it from every direction. While I find it unimaginable to condone the terrible tyranny of the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq, I find it equally difficult to support the actions of the Bush/Cheney government of my country in their unilateral invasion of a sovereign nation with known faulty evidence of nuclear capabilities.

On the other hand, I am sure that many in Iraq, especially those of the Bath Party and their friends, found a streak of generosity and charity, not to mention security, in the regime of Saddam Hussein. Many others in that country just felt the evil boot of official oppression on their necks. The same may be said of George W. Bush. Many in our nation vilify him after his presidency is now safely in the vaults of history. I personally feel that in time that criticism will end up where it belongs, around the necks of Dick Cheney and the neo-cons who pushed a malleable president into carrying out their designs. But just today on World Aids Day I heard an editorial comment about the great humanitarian effort spurred by George W. Bush to help assist some of the poorest amongst us, those afflicted with HIV/AIDS in Africa.

One of the reasons I have chosen to leave blogging pretty much behind and concentrate my efforts on my new career as a novelist, is that more and more I am seeing a duality in the world, one that shows a clear propensity among us all to be heroes sometimes and villains at others. It’s just human nature, and we are only deluding ourselves when we expect that our leaders are any less human than the rest of us. They are not! But it is up to us as thinking human beings to hold a healthy skepticism for their words, even if we like them. Remember, they all have their own agendas, and they don’t have a thing to do with us.

I hope that you will join me in endeavoring to bring a more peaceful view to bear on the world.

I think you’ll find that photo is that of one of Saddam’s doubles, probably Michaelef Ramadan.

Some slight differences here and there, but most notably he does not have the real Saddam’s bottomless eyes…
